What is the stipulation of maintenance due to a woman who has been divorced by her husband according to Imam Shafi. I have herd that the husband is liable to pay maintenance to that woman until she remarries unless the marries has broken down due to something that can be attributed to the wife. This is especially true if a man requested that the wife stops working to make a home for the family and raise the children.

Wa alaykum salam wa rahmatuLlahi wa barakatuHu,

If the divorce is one in which the husband may take the wife back (ar: talaq raj’iy), then providing her with full financial support (ar: nafaqah), including food and domicile but excluding items for her hygiene, is necessary for the duration of the waiting period (ar: ‘iddah). Providing both domicile and financial support is also the case if the woman was divorced irrevocably (ar: talaq ba’in) while pregnant. While if the divorce was irrevocable and she is not pregnant, then the husband must provide domicile but he does not need to provide other support. If the woman is disobedient (ar: nashizah), then she is not entitled to any support. The husband is only obligated to provide these for the duration of the waiting period. (Iqna’ 2/470)

And Allah knows best.
