Answer

I live in UK and i was wondering what is the islamic verdict according to the shafi and in fact any of the schools of thought in regards to the way a muslim should dress in a non-arab country. Is the sunnah customs of land or is it the clothing of arabs? Is there any text or rulings which speak about this from any of the madhaahib

Wa alaykum salam wa rahmatuLlahi wa barakatuHu,

I do not know what is intended by Arab clothing exactly. I can say that the Prophet Muhammad (upon him be peace) was an Arab. And to try and replicate things that the Prophet did out of love for him (ar: ta'asy) is recommended, including clothing. Clothing the Prophet wore and liked is detailed in the books of fiqh and also in hadith books like Imam Tirmidhi's Shama'il.

For one to dress in clothing specific to their people, there is no problem with that. (So long as the clothing does not violate any rulings in the Sacred Law.)

In al-Hawi lil-Fatawi 1/83, Imam Suyuti discusses the case of an Arab who was occupied with studying sacred knowledge, fiqh and other subjects. Some individuals ordered him to change out of his clothing and don the garments of that area's fuqaha'.  Perhaps those requesting the change in dress were Egyptians as Suyuti was based in Egypt, Allahu a'lam. Either way, they asked the Arab to change, and this matter eventually reached Imam Suyuti. He answered that it is fine for that individual to dress in the clothing of his people, or that individual can wear the other clothing. He cannot be reprimanded for dressing in either, and neither violate his maru'ah. He said both are acceptable.

This is also related in Ibn Qasim's hawashy on Tuhfah 3/33.

And Allah knows best.
